Eczema

Eczema (or atopic dermatitis) is a common, itchy skin rash that can form in small or widespread patches anywhere on the body.

Scratching worsens the condition, causing redness, swelling, cracking, crusting, and “weeping” of clear fluid. Eczema can begin in infancy and last throughout life. Because the skin on hands gets the most frequent exposure to rough conditions and allergens, hand eczema is very common and can become chronic. We know that eczema is a frustrating and uncomfortable condition that can cause skin damage, infection, and sleep loss. Our doctors not only treat acute symptoms to help heal skin and provide relief, but also counsel you on specific lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of future outbreaks. There are many topical and oral medications that can be effective in treating everything from mild to severe eczema. Occasionally narrowband ultraviolet phototherapy is required, as are antibiotics. For severe, stubborn eczema, some of the newer biologic agents used to treat psoriasis can be effective.
