Allergic Contact Dermatitis

Allergic contact dermatitis is irritation and inflammation of the skin, as a result of contact with a foreign substance.

Dermatits reactions can present as large, burning, and itchy rashes, with or without blistering. Dermatitis can be located anywhere on the body. These rashes, if left untreated, can take several weeks to heal completely. Common causes include plants, cosmetics, over the counter topical medications, dyes and materials in clothing and jewelry. Removal of the substance is imperative. Treating the area with topical or even oral steroids may be necessary to resolve symptoms and clear the rash. In some cases, the culprit substance may not be identified or patch testing by an allergist may be necessary.
