Got oily skin? Here are our favorite products to control oily facial skin

As dermatology providers, patients often ask us what products to use to control oily facial skin. Do you know that we offer not just one… but THREE exclusive products?
Each of the products below help control oiliness AND improve skin texture

Skin Authority Instant Perfection Peel Pads exfoliate the skin so it appears smoother, firmer, and brighter. The peel solution reduces the oily appearance and improves the skin’s texture. This product is great for flawless makeup application prep and boosting the performance of your daily products that follow. Gentle enough for daily use.

• Designed for aging skin prone to breakouts, Skinceuticals LHA Cleansing Gel combines potent exfoliating and cleansing agents with LHA, glycolic acid and salicylic acid. This combination of ingredients helps to decongest pores, smooth irregularities, brighten skin and reduce acne breakouts. LHA also diminishes surface indicators of age such as discolorations and fine lines.

Skinceuticals Blemish + Age Defense is a targeted, oil-free approach for aging adult skin prone to acne breakouts. It combines 2% dioic acid with an optimal alpha- and beta-hydroxy acid formulation to reduce the formation of acne and clogged pores, while helping improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.

The Effects of Your Teenager’s Acne Is Not Just Superficial

As adults, it’s easy to forget the small details that felt so incredibly big when we were younger. Since acne affects nearly 85% of the teen population along with 40% of adults, it shouldn’t be taken lightly.
What is acne?

Acne is a condition of the skin where the pores become clogged, eventually developing into whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and deeper nodules and cysts. Because there are varying degrees and types of acne, getting it under control, or stopping it entirely is often unattainable without the help of a qualified dermatologist.

In psychology, there have been numerous studies on the social and psychological effects that even mild acne has on teens. Social withdrawal is common. Teens that suffer from acne may have difficulty maintaining eye contact. Others and may experience diminished confidence. Because acne can affect the body, as well as the face, students often will retreat from any sports related activities due to the embarrassment associated with changing in the locker rooms or wearing certain uniforms. Teenagers are just learning to form critical bonds with their peers, teachers and other adults, so throwing in the difficulty of being self-conscious about their skin, can create a lack of self-confidence, reclusiveness and a fear of being taunted by other teenagers a cruel reality.

What can you do to help your teen?

Regrettably, acne can stay with teens into adulthood; so getting it under control is vital for your child’s future skin condition. A dermatologist can treat acne with oral antibiotics, topical creams, or Accutane (Isotretinoin). If your teenager has any old scarring from prior rashes or cystic acne, the doctor can use a simple laser treatment to help erase the scars. Taking your teenager to see a qualified dermatologist is imperative. A dermatologist can help clear skin and prevent permanent scars. Treatment will help lessen the social and emotional effects.

Dermatology Options for Acne:

• Cleansers and moisturizers
• Topical treatments
• Injections
• Chemical peels
• Laser treatments
• Accutane (treatment for severe acne)

Radiesse Hand Rejuvenation e1503060173785

Are Your Hands Giving Away Your Age?

Have you ever looked at your hands and wished that they would look… younger?

With age, our hands lose volume, which may leave skin looking thin and wrinkled, and exposing tendons and veins underneath.

Introducing Radiesse, the first and only dermal filler that has been FDA-approved for volume correction on the back of the hands. It is also FDA-approved for correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It may be just what you have been searching for, not just for your hands, but also your face. Like your face, your hands are constantly on display in your daily interactions with the people around you.

Radiesse works by not only providing immediate volume restoration, but also continues to work afterwards by stimulating the body to form its own natural collagen.

Ask your provider if Radiesse is just the right solution for your hands and face!

3 serums

Prevent the Signs of Aging with Topical Serums

SkinCeuticals products have been showcased in The Woodruff Institute’s line of carefully selected skincare products to help prevent the signs of aging.

Patients and providers alike have been raving about SkinCeuticals’ CE Ferulic and Phloretin CF. Both are daytime vitamin C antioxidant serums that also contain ferulic acid to enhance protection against environmental skin aging by neutralizing damaging free radicals. CE Ferulic improves the appearance of wrinkles and loss of firmness, as well as brightens skin’s complexion. Phloretin CF diminishes the look of discoloration and fine lines for a more even skin tone. CE Ferulic is available in a liquid serum that is great for normal to dry skin types. Phloretin CF is available in a light serum or gel. The serum is suitable for normal to oily skin types. The gel is comforting for normal to sensitive skin types.

SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel is another patient and provider favorite! Hydrating B5 gel is enriched with vitamin B5, which is known to help with tissue repair. Hydrating B5 Gel replenishes nutrients the skin needs to feel smooth and appear younger. This moisture-enhancing gel contains hyaluronic acid, the body’s natural hydrator, to bind moisture to the skin.

How do you apply serums?

  1. Always apply to clean, dry skin. 4-5 drops of either SkinCeutical’s CE ferulic or Phloretin CF to a dry face, neck, and chest is plenty.
  2. Give your serum a few minutes to sink in before you apply Skinceutical’s Hydratinge B5 gel or your moisturizer. To get the most out of your serum, it’s important to seal it in with something that protects the skin barrier.
  3. Apply sunscreen!
  4. Apply makeup… unless your serums have you looking so great you don’t need makeup!

Stop by any of our locations for a complimentary skin analysis to determine which serum is right for you. Offices in Downtown Naples, North Naples, Bonita Springs and Fort Myers.

Juvashape e1502226118699

Wondering Why You Should Choose JuVaShape over Coolsculpting?

Many of you have probably heard about Coolsculpting. Let us tell you why JuVaShape is THE lifestyle solution!

So, what is the difference between JuVaShape and Coolsculpting?

Although both treatments can reduce volume by destroying fat cells, JuVaShape takes things one step further by toning and tightening the skin. Once you’ve done Coolsculpting and the volume has been lost, you can be left with unsightly sagging skin. The underlying fat that once kept the skin looking full, has now disappeared, leaving the skin with a crepe-like appearance. When you have a JuVaShape treatment, you are tightening and toning while losing volume!

How does JuVaShape work?
JuVaShape uses patented bipolar technology to improve the appearance and the contour of your face and body. The Bipolar technology in JuVaShape destroys fat cells and reshapes problem areas of the face or body, by melting fat cells and cellulite. JuVaShape then forces your body to rapidly produce excess collagen to restore firmness back into your skin.

How does JuVaShape technology differ from Coolsculpting?
The Coolsculpting applicator is a rectangular shaped device that sucks the skin and fat into it like a vacuum. Any fat cells outside of the applicator are not removed, leading to a visible “bar” of fat around the perimeters of the applicator. People in the industry refer to this as a “Butter Bar”.
JuVaShape has two separate hand pieces, one for volume loss and one for tightening. The hand piece glides across the surface of the skin in circular motions to cover the entire treatment area. Since JuVaShape uses radio frequency technology, it absorbs evenly into the body, leaving no visible treatment lines and no bulges of volume outside of the treatment area.

Is there a difference in downtime with JuVaShape versus Coolsculpting?
Coolsculpting freezes whatever is inside the applicator. Once the applicator is removed, you can actually feel the crystalized frozen fat under the skin. It leaves a pins and needles sensation in the treatment area, similar to frostbite. It also creates swelling due to the suction of the applicator, which can be visible under clothing. You must wear very loose clothing due to the uncomfortable feeling. These after effects can sometimes last over a week!
JuVaShape has ZERO downtime! There should be no visible after effects from the treatment.

What about pain?
Pain isn’t something most people would willingly inflict on themselves, but that is unfortunately one of the downsides to Coolsculpting. It can be downright unbearable to some people. Due to the extreme suction and freezing, it’s quite painful during the first few minutes of treatment. Once the treatment area reaches the freezing temperature, the area then becomes numb.
JuVaShape, on the other hand, has a warming sensation that can be very comforting. In fact, many patients have compared it to a hot stone massage. There should never be any discomfort during a JuVaShape treatment, even if you feel like you might be heat sensitive. There is always a way to adjust the treatment settings to assure that you have a comfortable, pleasant experience.

JuVaShape is the perfect way to not just remove volume caused by increased fat, but also to tone, tighten and firm the skin. With no downtime, there’s no need to change your daily routine, or to feel limited as to what you can do after your treatment. There’s no pain involved, so you can enjoy your treatment and feel more relaxed after.

So, are you still wondering why you should choose JuVaShape? Honestly, if you compare the facts, there really is no reason not to!!

Summer Skin Check1 e1500476062784

Add a FREE Summer Skin Check to Your To-Do List

For your overall health and the health of your skin, we advise regular full body skin examinations. Skin checks are especially important for those who spend significant amounts of time in sunny Florida.

A full body skin examination is useful to identify potentially harmful lesions, such as skin cancers or pre-cancers. Early detection is key for early treatment, since the vast majority of skin cancers are curable when detected early. Skin cancers do grow over time. Some skin cancers can travel to other parts of the body. Some, like melanoma, can spread quickly and be very dangerous to your life and health.

Regular full body skin examinations are highly recommended if:

  • you have a personal history of skin cancers or pre-cancers
  • family history of melanoma
  • or if you have multiple moles, congenital nevi (moles that were present at birth), history of “dysplastic” (or atypical) moles, or significant history of sun exposure.

When you come to us for your full body skin examination, for your comfort and convenience we usually ask you to put on a gown. Here are some tips for you to best prepare for your next full body skin exam:

  • To ensure we can thoroughly examine your face, it would be ideal if you can come in without makeup.
  • It would be preferred that you do not have any fingernail or toenail polish on, so we can check for any lesions under your nails.
  • In addition, it would be best not to have a lot of hairspray on if possible, so we can readily look through your scalp.

During your full body skin examination, your dermatology provider also evaluates for signs of sun damage and recommends sun protective measures. We at The Woodruff Institute of Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery are looking forward to seeing you at your next full body skin examination!

Now through 8/31/17, we are offering FREE skin cancer screenings in our Fort Myers location. Pre-registration is required. New patients only.

The Dermatologist Is In — Sun Safety Tips for UV Safety Month

We’ve all heard about the damaging effects of the sun’s harmful UV rays, but are we actually paying attention to the details?  What better experts to trust than the World Health Organization (WHO) when you’re in need of reliable medical information.  According to WHO, “Prolonged human exposure to solar UV radiation may result in acute and chronic health effects on the skin, eye and immune system. Sunburn (erythema) is the best-known acute effect of excessive UV radiation exposure. Over the longer term, UV radiation induces degenerative changes in cells of the skin, fibrous tissue and blood vessels leading to premature skin aging, photodermatoses and actinic keratoses. Another long-term effect is an inflammatory reaction of the eye. In the most serious cases, skin cancer and cataracts can occur.”

How can we protect ourselves?

  • Seek shade: especially between 10 am and 4 pm when the sun is strongest. If you’re outside during the day, look for a shady spot underneath an umbrella, awning or tree.
  • Clothing can be the most effective form of sun protection: Loosely fitting, long sleeve shirts and pants are imperative to keep the UV rays from penetrating your skin.
  • Wear a broad-brimmed hat: A hat can provide additional shade to your face, chest, and neck and also protect your scalp from UV radiation.
  • Use sunscreen: For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant formula with an SPF of 30 or higher. Make sure the label states “broad spectrum” which means it protects against UVA and UVB rays.
  • Use enough sunscreen: For adequate protection, apply one ounce (two tablespoons, about a shot glass full) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating.
  • Protect your eyes: Wearing UV-blocking sunglasses can help to protect your eyes from developing cataracts, growths on the eye, and cancer. Sun damage to eyes can occur anytime during the year, not just in the summertime, so be sure to wear UV-blocking sunglasses whenever you’re outside.

The Woodruff Institute for Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery offers quality skin care products in their Naples, Bonita Springs and Fort Myers locations.  Licensed medical aestheticians will meet with clients to perform skin assessments to determine the best products for their skin type and concerns.  Of course, the first product every dermatologists recommends is sunscreen.  Since not all sunscreens are the same, it’s important to ask your dermatologist which sunscreens are best for you.

For your convenience and to simplify your shopping experience, the Woodruff Institute carries the following products:

  • Elta MD sunscreens: EltaMD is a broad-spectrum suncare line for all skin types, which blocks out both UVA and UVB rays.
  • BloqUV Suncare clothing: BloqUV sun shirts are not only stylish, but are made of the highest quality fabrics and block out 98% of the sun’s harmful rays.
  • Wallaroo sun protective hats: Wallaroo offers an elegant line of hats for adults and a fun selection of children’s hats. Wallaroo hats are highly recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation because they offer an SPF protection of 50. Not only do they provide adequate shade, but they also protect your scalp, which is one of the main areas a skin cancer can hide.

Last but definitely not least, you must make certain to have an annual skin cancer screening, because although sun protection efforts can help decrease your chances of skin cancer, melanoma can hide in odd places, like the bottom of your feet or behind your ears.  Having a dermatologist scan your body is worth the ten minutes it takes to save your life.  The Woodruff Institute recommends setting automatic reminders on your phone.  For those less tech savvy, they recommend trying to make your appointment close to your birthday or anniversary, so it’s easy to remember.

Please call our toll free number at 844.485.0104 for a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists at one of our offices in Naples, Bonita Springs, or Fort Myers.
