Top Cosmetic Procedures in South West Florida for the Holidays

Whether you’re attending Thursdays on Third in Naples, or holiday shopping at Coconut Point in Estero, or one of the many holiday boat parades and Christmas tree lightings from Naples, Bonita Springs to Fort Myers… you will want to look fabulous this holiday season!

The problem is, a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance takes time and planning. The Woodruff Institute for Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery has complied the list below, supported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, of the top cosmetic procedures to prepare for the holidays. These treatments are available at any of The Woodruff Institute’s locations and can ensure you look your best for the season’s festivities, but only if you start planning now!

Blepharoplasty: Plan 1 Month Ahead

The delicate, thin skin of the upper eyelid can slowly sag with age, resulting in eyes that look tired, uninterested, and even unhealthy. A blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure designed to eliminate this lax tissue, creating a brighter, more awake look to the appearance. The blepharoplasty can also address the loose fat pads that pull downward both above and below the eye, eliminating dark circles and under eye “bags”. The benefits of an eyelid lift can be seen almost immediately. Bruising and swelling are generally mild, but patients should give themselves from two to four weeks for healing. Call today for a complimentary consultation with board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Jonathan Sonne.

Kybella: Plan 4-8 Weeks Ahead

Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injectable drug that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin.” This common yet undertreated aesthetic facial condition can detract from an otherwise balanced and harmonious facial appearance- leading to an older and heavier look. Since everyone’s chin profile is different, the number of treatments varies from patient to patient. The in-office treatment takes 15 minutes and you will likely have some swelling, bruising, or numbness under your chin. You may receive up to 6 treatment sessions, spaced at least 1 month apart. Many patients experience visible results in 2 KYBELLA® treatments.

Botox/Dysport: Plan 3-4 Weeks Ahead

The neurotoxins, Botox & Dysport, temporarily weaken muscles, relaxing wrinkles. Botox & Dysport target dynamic facial lines, or those caused by repetitive expressions, including Crows’ Feet, forehead creases, and frown lines. As the muscles release, the face will look younger and more refreshed. The in-office treatment takes only a few minutes and requires no downtime. While the results from Botox & Dysport are not immediate, they will last for up to three months. In about two weeks, early benefits of Botox & Dysport can be seen. For the best results, schedule your Botox / Dysport session three to four weeks before your holiday celebration.

Dermal Fillers: Plan A Few Days Ahead

The dermal filler family includes injectibles like Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, and Voluma. Created from collagen-renewing substances such as Hyaluronic Acid, fillers plump wrinkles, smooth acne scars, lift tissues, and restore volume under the eyes or across the cheeks. The results from fillers can be seen immediately after administration and will last from six to twelve months. Do not wait till the last minute to plan on a dermal filler session, however, since mild bruising and swelling may occur after treatment.

If you want to put your best face forward this holiday season, there is no time to waste. Call The Woodruff Institute for Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery today! 239-498-DERM (3376)

Don’t Be Spooked By Skin Cancer?

With Halloween fast approaching, our physicians and staff don’t want you to be scared of skin cancer… we want you to be well informed.

Skin cancer can be a scary diagnosis, but if detected early skin cancers can oftentimes be cured easily. Because early detection is the key to successful treatment, The Woodruff Institute for Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery emphasizes the importance of regular full body skin screenings, to detect skin cancers in the earliest stages.

Should you get a skin cancer diagnosis, common skin cancer treatments include electrodesiccation and curettage (also known as ED&C), topical therapies, surgical excision, and/or radiation. However, if the tumor is in a cosmetically sensitive area, has been previously treated, is large, is not clearly defined, or arises in a scar, Mohs surgery offers the highest potential for complete removal of the cancer, while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. Mohs surgery has superior cure rates to surgical excision with frozen sections. In Mohs surgery, the tissue is processed so that every cell along the margins is examined. With traditional frozen sections only a few samples of the whole specimen are examined, with the hope that the samples represent the entire tumor.

The Woodruff Institute, located in Naples, Bonita Springs – Estero, & Fort Myers, Florida offers Southwest Florida patients the benefits of fellowship trained Mohs Surgeons and a board certified Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon under one roof. Our patients receive the precision of a Mohs Surgeon and the aesthetic expertise of a Facial Plastic Surgeon for the treatment of their skin cancers. A Mohs surgeon is a specially trained dermatologist who removes skin cancers and is also speically trained as a pathologist and reconstructive surgeon. The American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology (Mohs College) (www.mohscollege.org) is the oldest professional organization of physicians trained in Mohs micrographic surgery. To be accepted as a member of the Mohs College, a physician must complete a three-year residency in dermatology or a related field, plus a one- or two-year fellowship approved by the Mohs College that includes extensive training in pathology and reconstructive surgery. Physicians who have completed a Mohs College approved fellowship will, by virtue of their rigorous training, possess the skills and expertise necessary to perform Mohs microgaphic surgery at all levels of complexity.

A More Precise Skin Cancer Screening

A small investment of your time can help save your life!

Living in Florida, we all know the importance of sun safety and skin cancer screenings. Every hour a person dies of melanoma, and this year alone, over 76,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed. On average skin cancer screenings take about 10 minutes, which could potentially save your life.

Along with the unfortunate diagnosis of melanoma, there are many other concerns and cancers that can be detected in your dermatologist’s office with a thorough, proper, skin cancer screening. It is recommended that you have a screening at least once a year. And, because some forms of skin cancer grow very rapidly, if you notice any new lesions, bumps, or moles that are of concern, you should schedule a dermatology appointment immediately.

The Woodruff Institute for Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery goes one step further during your skin cancer screening. Their providers use a dermatoscope, which is a handheld magnification device that allows them to see skin lesions in greater detail, helping them to decipher whether or not your mole or lesion is concerning. Under the dermatoscope a mole that may have appeared normal to the naked eye, may show signs of abnormality, like having an irregular pattern. On the contrary, a mole that may have appeared to be irregular to the naked eye may show to be completely normal under the scope and alleviate the need for an unnecessary biopsy.

The signs of melanoma to look for in moles or lesions are outlined in this simple acronym, ABCDE:

A—Asymmetry
B—Border Irregularity
C—Color-Variegated
D—Diameter (>6 mm)
E—Evolving

The Woodruff Institute for Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery’s highly regarded dermatologists, not only use the in-depth dermatoscope screening on all of their patients, but they also teach their patients the importance of doing at home self skin examinations. Our dermatologists will show you what to look for, what’s normal, and when to get a professional exam.

Our approach to skin cancer is proactive, preventive and prescriptive. With office locations in Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero and the Fort Myers area, the Woodruff Institute for Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery continuously educates the local community to avoid sun exposure and to always use effective sun protection. The best way to identify potential skin cancer is through annual full-body skin examinations with qualified medical professionals. Because it’s nearly impossible to look at your own skin in its entirety, and unfortunately skin cancers can hide from sight or be mistaken for harmless skin growths, it’s essential to see a dermatologist regularly.

Because early detection is the key to successful treatment, The Woodruff Institute emphasizes the importance of regular screenings, knowing that proactive prevention and early detection continue to be the smartest strategies.

eyelid surgery puerto vallarta

Slow the Hands of Time with an “Eye Lift”

Men and women are increasingly opting for eyelid surgery procedures, or “eye lifts” as they’re widely known.

Knowing that no skincare regimen will solve a droopy eyelid look, men and women elect this popular surgery for an immediate, lasting effect. As shown in a recent global survey results, eyelid surgery ranks as the third most popular surgery worldwide, accounting for 13.1% of all surgical procedures.

People are slowing the hands of time by choosing to improve their “windows to the soul” in this popular procedure. This surgery is usually done for cosmetic reasons, but for those whose vision is impacted by drooping eyelids, it becomes a necessity. With age, the skin naturally droops due to gravity, environmental exposure and genetics. No amount of skin creams can combat this undesired effect of aging.

Because the eyes are so telling of a person’s thoughts and feelings, it makes sense that men and women alike would be eager to have this area look as good as possible.

Jonathan E. Sonne, M.D., founding member of The Woodruff Institute for Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery, is a fellowship trained and board certified Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon. Dr. Sonne is one of a small group of surgeons in Southwest Florida that has achieved Dual Board Certification in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery as well as Head and Neck Surgery.

To find out is you can benefit from eyelid surgery, please call our toll free number at 844.485.0104 for a complimentary consultation with Dr. Jonathan E. Sonne.

The Woodruff Institute at Fort Myers went “Back to School”

The Woodruff Institute for Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery’s Fort Myers team joined others in the community to help educate the children at the Community Helper Day at the Evangelical Christian School on Friday, September 16th.

The event also featured various other community helpers such as the Lee County Emergency Medical Services, the Scouts, the Sheriff, dentist, psychologist, and other health professionals. The lower elementary school children were divided into groups that rotated through the various learning stations with their teachers and a few parent volunteers.

Dr. Hedy G. Setyadi taught the children the benefits and the steps for sun protection early on in their young lives. To help drive the point across, our medical assistants, Ms. Lyra and Ms. Margarita shared with the kids the results of a fun experiment of how the UV bracelet reacted to the sun exposure with and without sunscreen, even underwater, and also under sunglasses. The children enthusiastically answered our questions and of course, asked great questions as well. They were very excited to receive goodie-bags filled with educational materials on healthy sun protection habits, UV bracelet that changes colors under sunlight, sunscreen and other skin care product samples, and of course, a little surprise treat from us. The event was a success! Afterwards, everyone went out to the football field to watch a mosquito control helicopter perform remarkably skillful low-lying maneuvers before taking off.

Dr. Setyadi welcomes patients of all ages at The Woodruff Institute’s Fort Myers office, located at 14440 Metropolis Avenue, Suite 102. Same week appointments available. Request an appointment online or call our office at (239) 498-DERM (3376) for more information.
