At The Woodruff Institute for Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery, Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatments are available to treat brown and red spots caused by sun damage or rosacea. Rosacea is chronic inflammation which causes persistent redness and broken blood vessels on the face. Red patches from rosacea is a chronic condition, but IPL can improve the appearance of rosacea. IPL treatments are also effective for treating brown spots caused by chronic sun exposure.

What to expect during IPL treatment

Topical numbing cream is applied for approximately 15 minutes before treatment for the most comfortable experience. When undergoing IPL treatment, you will experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation. Before vascular treatments, a gel is commonly applied to cool the skin. Immediately following the treatment, brown spots will typically start to darken and the skin may appear mildly red and slightly swollen. This may last hours to days. You may use mineral make-up to conceal the redness/ darkness.

Do not forget to practice sun protection with the appropriate sunscreen and sun-protective clothing to minimize the formation of new brown and red spots from sun damage. Should you develop new brown or red spots after sun exposure, repeat IPL the treatments can be performed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BABY FOOT

How do I use Baby Foot? One Baby Foot pack contains a plastic sock for each foot. Apply medicated socks and secure with tape. Only one application is necessary, which involves a one hour soaking time. It may take 3-7 days for peeling to start. The peeling process could take approximately two weeks. (Results will vary between individuals)

Do I need to stay seated while I am using Baby Foot?  We recommend limited walking. Enhance your experience by adding a pair of socks over the plastic booties and a pair of shoes.

Do I wash the foot after soaking?  Yes, remove the plastic booties after using the 1 hour treatment, then rinse feet thoroughly. Remember, don’t add lotion to your feet until the peeling process is complete. If your feet are too dry, you may use a oil free lotion from time to time.

After my treatment, how do I take care of my feet?  Bathe as usual and do not add lotion if possible. If your feet become too dry you may lightly add an oil free moisturizer. Not required, but the peeling process will be enhanced if you can soak your feet daily.

Is Baby Foot re-usable?  No, single use only.

My heel is very rough. Is it ok to use Baby Foot?  Baby Foot is widely used by people who experience dry and rough skin on their soles or old dead skin cells on their heel and toes.

It has been one week since I used Baby Foot, but no dead skin cells have peeled off. How long do they take to peel off?  Results will vary among individuals due to the thickness of the dead skin cells on the soles of the feet. Peeling usually begins within 3 – 7 days, but could be as long as 14 days. Soaking your feet daily will speed up this process. The peeling process usually completes within 7 – 10 days. After bathing, gently rub your feet with your hands to commence the peeling process. Do not use a foot file.

After using Baby Foot, I noticed that I still had some dead skin cells on my soles. When can I use Baby Foot again?  You can use Baby Foot 2 weeks after your initial application. We recommend waiting until all inital peeling has subsided.

How often do you recommend the use of Baby Foot?  Baby Foot can be used whenever you notice the build up of dead skin cells. We recommend using it every 2 months. This time frame will vary based on the individual.

Botox & Dysport: Real-life “Fountain of Youth”

For more than fifteen years now, botulinum toxin has been FDA-approved for treating frown lines (a.k.a wrinkles), starting with Botox. Now in addition to Botox, Dysport has also been very successfully used and well-liked by practitioners and patients alike. They are widely used to improve and prevent frown lines in-between the eyebrows, the horizontal lines on the forehead, and the “crow’s feet” (on the sides of the corner of the eyes) as some of the most common areas of use.

For those of us who are 30 years old or above, botulinum toxin is used not only for corrective reasons, but also to prevent lines from forming on the areas from our routine facial expressions. These days, millennials are trying Botox & Dysport and discovering their benefits to be the closest to a real-life “fountain of youth”. When botulinum toxin is done for preventative purposes, less amount may be needed for each treatment, as opposed to corrective purposes. The amount injected is customized to individual needs, usually depending on how strong the muscles are in a specific area.

The Woodruff Institute’s providers recommend Arnica Forte tablets before and after all injectable treatments, like Botox, Dysport and/or injectable fillers, to help lessen and/or prevent bruising altogether.

Arnica Forte combines the natural benefits of Arnica montana and bromelain, both are derived from plants. Arnica montana is a flowering plant native to western North America and the mountainous regions of Europe. It has been used for centuries to reduce inflammation, pain, and swelling associated with bruises. Bromelain is an extract from mainly the stem of Ananas comosus, the pineapple plant. It is also available in lesser quantities in the rest of the fresh plant and fruit. Bromelain has been used in Central and South America since the 17th century to help reduce inflammation and bruising.

Nowadays, both Arnica montana and bromelain are commonly used before and after cosmetic procedures. Many cosmetic and health care providers as well as patients recommend them and report less bruising with their use. Topical Arnica Forte may be applied twice daily on intact skin after procedures. Oral Arnica Forte is often used up to one to two days prior to the procedure and continued up to five days afterwards.

The Benefits of Blepharoplasty at The Woodruff Institute

It may not be one of the more talked about cosmetic surgeries but it is one of the most common — eyelid surgery also known as blepharoplasty. The popularity of blepharoplasty is due to the dramatic difference it makes both aesthetically and functionally. The skin around the eyes droops with age, leading to a tired, older appearance. Fixing this can be as dramatic as a facelift, but with only a fraction of the invasiveness.

Eyelid surgery is done by making a small incision in the fold of the eyelid. Since the incision is in a natural crease, there is minimal scarring. The excess skin and fatty tissue is removed and stitches are placed to close the incision. Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure, often performed under local anesthetic.

What some people don’t think about is that eyelid surgery has functional benefits in many cases as well. Often, drooping skin around the eyes can lead to a loss of peripheral vision that comes on so gradually that you don’t even notice. Removing that skin can allow you to see the world fully again. Though most forms of cosmetic surgery are not covered by insurance plans, blepharoplasty sometimes is, just for that reason.
