The Woodruff Institute for Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery is opening its new 3,600-square-foot Fort Myers facility on March 7th!

The office is located at 14440 Metropolis Avenue, Suite 102, just north of the intersection of Metro Parkway and Six Mile Cypress Parkway. Adding a new location will allow the practice to further expand its general dermatology, surgical dermatology, Mohs surgery and cosmetic surgery services to the people of Southwest Florida. Board-certified dermatologist and fellowship trained Mohs surgeon Kathryn J. Russell M.D. and Sarah M. Schloss PA-C, will treat patients of all ages throughout the week.

Q. What inspired you to pursue a career as a physician?
I grew up in a family of doctors, but despite (or perhaps because of) their encouragement, I resisted becoming a physician until the very end of college. When the reality of picking a career finally set in, I knew that I not only wanted to be intellectually stimulated, but needed to feel that I was making a significant contribution to society as well. I thought back to the most meaningful experiences of my life to that point and kept going to my sixteenth summer when I assisted my ophthalmologist father with cataract surgery at a rural bush hospital in Maua, Kenya. The difference we made in the lives of dozens of people in one short week was significant. I realized what a privilege it would be to be able to help people in that way every day for my entire professional career.

Q. What are your specialties?
I stumbled on the field of dermatology almost by accident as it is not an area that gets a lot of attention in medical school. At Columbia University, where I attended medical school, we were required to do one week of dermatology in our third year. By lunch time of the first day of my dermatology rotation I knew I had found the specialty meant for me. I will not ever forget that “aha” moment and the feeling of excitement I had on that day. Until that point, I had been focused on general surgery, so pursuing a fellowship in Mohs surgery after my dermatology residency was an obvious choice.

Q. What are some of the highlights of your career?
When I think of the highlights of my career lots of faces pass through my mind, faces of patients, patients I have helped and patients who have helped me become a better physician. I wonder if these patients know what an impression they have made on me and my career. I remember the father of a friend that we squeezed in for a squamous cell carcinoma on the scalp, that ended up being much larger than anyone expected. We got it out and put him back together so that today you can hardly see a scar. I remember the young mother with the funny pink spot on her arm that turned out to be a melanoma that had already spread to her lymph nodes, but with excellent care and prompt treatment she is alive and well twelve years later. I think of the gentleman I saw today, who has had more basal cell carcinomas in the ten years I have known him than anyone else I have met. We have caught his skin cancers early and treated them in the least invasive ways possible so that you have to look hard to see a single scar. It is patients like these that make me love my career.

Q. What are three things a patient can do to maintain healthy skin?
Sunscreen, hat, and a sun shirt. We all know we should wear sunscreen, but never leaving the house without it, even on a rainy day, will really make a difference. When you have too much hair that you can’t put sunscreen on your scalp, but not enough hair to adequately protect your scalp, a hat is the only answer. And this certainly applies to women as well (visors don’t count). There is no better way to protect your shoulders and chest than a physical barrier like a sun shirt. My favorite is the BloqUV shirt that we sell in our Naples, Bonita Springs and Fort Myers offices. There are men and women styles and they come in a variety of colors.

Q: Do you have advice for preventing the signs of aging without spending a fortune?
A yearly intense pulse light (IPL) treatment has done wonders for my skin. Each treatment is around $450, so although not inexpensive, it is money well spent.

Q. What do you include in your own skin care regimen?
I never go without Elta MD Clear, a zinc based sun screen that does not contain parabens or fragrance. It also contains lots of wonderful things for you skin like niacinamide, lactic acid, and hyaluronic acid, but is still light enough to wear under makeup without feeling greasy.

Q. What are the most common procedures you perform? What are the ones you most commonly recommend?
My practice is focused on Mohs surgery. Mohs is the most effective way to remove basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas with minimized scarring. I do Mohs surgery in conjunction my husband Dr. Jonathan Sonne, a facial plastic surgeon, so our patients benefit from the expertise of a fellowship trained Mohs surgeon to remove the tumor as well as a fellowship trained plastic surgeon to repair the wound.

Q. What inspires you most in life?
I am inspired by the desire to do good. I have been blessed in so many ways throughout my life and try to show my gratitude by helping others.

Q. What do you like to do for fun?
I love to hang out with my kids. They make me laugh and we all need to laugh a little more.

Martha started her career in dermatology in 2012, and joined The Woodruff Institute with an extensive background in aesthetics, retail, and customer service. She offers customized JuVaShape treatment plans tailored to her patient’s specific needs and goals and is passionate about giving her patients the best care possible. With her extensive product knowledge, Martha is able to recommend effective at-home regimens to help her patients maintain desired results after their JuVashape treatments.

Martha located to South West Florida in 2000 and enjoys spending time outdoors with her dogs.

Q. What inspired you to pursue a career as a physician?
My sister had major medical problems as a child so we were around doctors and medical facilities a lot. I realized a wanted to be a physician at a young age but wasn’t sure of what type. Growing up in Florida and being fair, we went to the dermatologist often for regular ‘mole checks’ and I enjoyed these visits. In high school, I was a part of a work-study opportunity and chose to spend my afternoons shadowing a dermatologist in my hometown. I loved it and from then on, I knew I wanted to be a dermatologist.

Q. What are some of the highlights of your career?
Joining the Woodruff Institute! and serving as chief resident during my residency in New York.

Q. What are three things a patient can do to maintain healthy skin?
Sunscreen everyday! Moisturize everyday! Healthy lifestyle habits- sleep hygiene, drinking plenty of water, relaxation techniques (all easier said than done).

Q: Do you have advice for preventing the signs of aging without spending a fortune?
A daily moisturizer with SPF 15 or more (30 is ideal) and a daily antioxidant serum.

Q. What do you include in your own skin care regimen?

Q. What are the most common procedures you perform? What are the ones you most commonly recommend?
Mohs surgery for skin cancers. Laser procedures for brown spots and blood vessels. Non-invasive cosmetic procedures like neurotoxin injections, fillers and vein treatments.
I recommend a full-body skin check once a year!

Q. What do you like to do for fun?
Traveling and boating. I’d love to eventually visit every continent.

Rebecca W. Lambert MD, one of the founding members of The Woodruff Institute, and Kathryn J. Russell MD are fellowship trained Mohs Surgeons. Mohs surgery is a surgical procedure designed to remove a skin cancer completely, yet leaving as much healthy tissue behind as possible. In fellowship-trained hands, Mohs surgery offers the highest cure rate among all other treatments for skin cancer.

While any dermatologist may offer to perform Mohs surgery, only Fellows of the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS) have undergone rigorous fellowship training. Mohs Surgery Fellows are chosen through an extremely competitive selection process and are required to complete an intensive 1 or 2 year post-residency ACMS fellowship training program. Becoming a Fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery is a qualification earned by less than 8% of all dermatologists nationwide.

Jonathan E. Sonne, MD, also a founding member of The Woodruff Institute, is a fellowship trained and board certified Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon. Our patients receive the precision of a Mohs Surgeon and the aesthetic expertise of a Facial Plastic Surgeon for the treatment of their skin cancers to give the best possible results.

Our approach to skin cancer is proactive, preventive, and prescriptive. Our goal is to completely remove the tumor while minimizing the scarring. There are a variety of treatments available to patients for enhancement of reconstructed areas following skin cancer surgery. Since 2004, The Woodruff Institute has offered Southwest Florida patients the region’s highest quality, state-of-the-art facial aesthetic surgery, dermatology and reconstructive surgery. Our team is dedicated to providing personalized, quality care in an elegant environment, with services ranging from skin cancer treatment, psoriasis management, acne and rosacea treatment, to the latest in cosmetic procedures.

Plans for this state-of-the-art new facility include full service medical, cosmetic and surgical dermatology, including Mohs Surgery performed by fellowship-trained Mohs Surgeon, Kathryn J. Russell, M.D.

The design phase for the new facility has been completed, and construction begins soon! We plan to move in the Fall of 2016.

In addition to this exciting news, we are delighted to announce that Sarah M. Schloss, PA-C will be joining our practice. Sarah is a nationally certified Physician Assistant who has been specializing in medical and cosmetic dermatology since 2007. She obtained her Master’s of Medical Science at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and is an affiliate of the Florida Academy of Physician Assistants, American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants. Sarah specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of adult and pediatric dermatology disorders. She is also certified and trained to perform both cosmetic and medical laser procedures.
