The event also featured various other community helpers such as the Lee County Emergency Medical Services, the Scouts, the Sheriff, dentist, psychologist, and other health professionals. The lower elementary school children were divided into groups that rotated through the various learning stations with their teachers and a few parent volunteers.
Dr. Hedy G. Setyadi taught the children the benefits and the steps for sun protection early on in their young lives. To help drive the point across, our medical assistants, Ms. Lyra and Ms. Margarita shared with the kids the results of a fun experiment of how the UV bracelet reacted to the sun exposure with and without sunscreen, even underwater, and also under sunglasses. The children enthusiastically answered our questions and of course, asked great questions as well. They were very excited to receive goodie-bags filled with educational materials on healthy sun protection habits, UV bracelet that changes colors under sunlight, sunscreen and other skin care product samples, and of course, a little surprise treat from us. The event was a success! Afterwards, everyone went out to the football field to watch a mosquito control helicopter perform remarkably skillful low-lying maneuvers before taking off.
